Why Dina newsroom computer system?

In a newsroom not so far away (based on a true story)

  • Anne is the evening producer. She browses a press release and deems it a potentially good story.
  • Anne assigns a reporter from the evening shift to work on it.
whydina-time-02
whydina-person-02
  • Morten is assigned and starts researching. He manages to dig up additional data to make the story relevant for a broader audience.
  • Morten is not able to finish the task, and asks the editor to include his research in the handover for the morning shift.

  • Jacob is the editor and attaches the press release and some notes in the handover.
  • In the heat of the moment he forgets the spreadsheet with data he received in an email from Morten.

  • Mathias is the morning producer and assigns a reporter to complete the work started by Morten.
  • He forwards info from the handover, but forgets to attach the press release which was the foundation for the story.
  • Also, Mathias does not know about Morten´s  researched data, which would make the story more powerful.

whydina-person-05
  • Camilla is given the assignment, and starts by calling a source she has spoken to in the past regarding something similar and she records the audio of the interview.
  • She does not realize Morten has dug up powerful data or that a press release with relevant information exists.

  • Emilie is a digital reporter and is assigned by the online editor to make a version of the story based on the press release.
  • She does not know about Morten´s data.
  • Emilie waits ten minutes for a more specific brief from the editor, who is busy mailing staff regarding stories of the day.
  • Emilie spends 15 minutes trying to find the phone number for the source Camilla has already interviewed.
  • She´s not able to get hold of the source, and instead leaves to shoot fresh stills for the story with her iPhone, which she emails the online editor.
  • At 2 pm Emilie hears about the phone interview, but Camilla has left for the day and is unreachable. The audio file from the interview is stored locally on Camilla’s laptop.

  • Tina is the presenter, preparing the 7pm newscast. A recurrent element in the show is a voiceover followed by a sound-bite and a lead out web tease.
  • Jan is the director and tries to piece together  something suitable for Tina, not knowing about the press release, Morten´s research, Camilla´s phone interview, or that Emilie has prepared a web-story that would be great for a tease
whydina-time-08
whydina-person-08
  • Jan the director picks up the trail, but can´t get started on the voiceover because he does not have access to Camilla´s phone interview.
  • Jan doesn't know about Emilie´s  iPhone stills which would be perfect for the voiceover, and ends up using a boring stock-photo.
whydina-time-09
whydina-person-03
  • Jacob the editor is off duty, but realizes he forgot to pass on the spreadsheet containing the important data researched by Morten. He forwards the email at 4.59pm.
whydina-time-10
whydina-person-09
  • Emilie the online reporter has gone home, and never receives the data researched by Morten. But Nick in graphics is working overtime, and manages just barely to pump out something usable for the voiceover in the 7pm show.
  • Nick also produces graphics for the online story, which he emails the evening producer before he leaves.
whydina-time-11
whydina-person-10
  • Mathias is about to wrap things up, but assigns an evening reporter to write an online version based on the voiceover, not knowing of Emilie´s work.
  • Hence he never attaches Emilie´s iPhone photos.
  • He also does not know that Nick is working on graphics.
whydina-time-12
whydina-person-11
  • Rikke is the evening reporter assigned by Mathias.
  • She makes a piece based on the script in the rundown, not knowing about the press release, Morten´s research data, Nick´s graphics or Emilie´s already published online story.
whydina-time-13
whydina-person-12
  • Peter is a TV reporter who has made a great exclusive for the 7pm show.
  • He has spent an entire extra day preparing a super strong Facebook edition video of the story.
  • …unfortunately neither the evening producer nor the editor realizes the FB-edition exists, because it´s buried deep inside the NRCS. Hence it´s never published.

We mess up, squander away time and make sub-par content.

Chaos

  • Research is being lost
  • Content is being produced, but never used
  • We waste time finding sources and phone numbers
  • We waste time finding information others have already found
  • We waste time waiting for others to forward material
  • We waste time trying to find out who has specific pieces of material
  • We make inferior content
  • We have great ideas, which are forgotten three days later when we need them

Where are the components of our news?

  • Research: In a notebook/in an email/in personal note systems/in the heads of a handful of different reporters.
  • Phone interviews: On someone's computer or in a reporter's mailbox (who probably has a day off).
  • Stills: Maybe in the editors private mailboxes, or in the bloated common editorial mailbox. Maybe in an online reporter's mailbox. Or maybe they were never shot after all.
  • Press releases: Maybe in the handover, maybe in the editorial mail, or maybe in the mailbox belonging to one of you who have left for the day

Our tools do not support our needs

A media house – not a TV station

We should all collaborate. But we work in silos.

Old systems help us create rundowns. Dina helps us tell stories!

  • One common tool, where every story starts.
  • One place to store and find the information you need to get the job done, no matter what your role is in Acne TV.
  • One place to get an overview of every story, no matter what platform it sits on.
